Bal-Swing 1-3 |
|
| TEACHERS | Marcus and Barbl | |
| DETAILS | Balboa was very popular among the College Kids
and the sophisticated dancers in the mid 30s and is now extremely popular
once again. Originally Balboa was a closed position swing form with intricate
footwork predominantly based on 8-count patterns. But when the hot Swing
music really hit the scene some of the younger dancers like Maxie Dorf and
Lolly Wise added break-aways and swing turns to the Balboa, which nowadays
is often referred to as Bal-Swing. Balboa can be danced to any speed of
music, from slow songs at 120 beats/min. till very fast ones at 300 beats/min.
Pure Balboa is probably the easiest way to dance to fast swing music, enjoy
it, and look good.
This video doesn’t require any experience in Balboa. You will first learn the most typical steps and principles that form the character of Balboa. Every step is broken down and well explained to make you feel comfortable on the dance floor, and to have fun. Building on that foundation you will learn more footwork variations and patterns to get a deeper insight into Balboa. This instructional video contains 50 (!) different steps. Cool and fancy footwork will put you in the position to play more with the music and will make your Balboa very attractive. This DVD is a three title set with a lot of great bonus material. The content is the content of the three Balboa VHS videos plus an extended documentary and extra performances/demos. Balboa/Bal-Swing 1 (63 min.) Balboa/Bal-Swing 2 (56 min.) Dean Collins Shim Sham |
|
| TEACHERS | Marcus and Barbl | |
| DETAILS | Level: Intermediate/Advanced The Shim Sham originated as a tap dance choreographed by Leonard Reed (1907-2004, and Willie Bryant in 1928. Intended for a show finale that could be done by all the performers it was adopted by many dancers and became one of the most well-known and wide-spread routines of all times. You may be familiar with the tap version or the non-tap version that Frankie Manning made popular teaching at many swing dance camps and workshops all over the world. The Dean Collins version of the Shim Sham is also a non-tap version based on the original Shim Sham with spiced up footwork and additional steps extending the routine. Dean Collins was the most influential Lindy Hop dancer on the West Coast and played an essential role in bringing the New York style of Swing dancing to the West Coast in 1938. If you want to improve your dancing we highly recommend learning and practicing Dean's Shim Sham routine. The steps and transitions might be a bit tricky, but you won't improve by doing only the things that come easily! They will break everything down so that you can be part of the group the next time when Dean's Shim Sham is called. Dean Collins died already in 1984, but this video includes interviews with some of the best dancers like Leonard Reed Bart Bartolo, Bobby Hefner, Freda Angela, Gil Bradey, Mary Collins, and Rusty Frank. Many of them learned the routine by Dean Collins himself. Chorus 1 Chorus 2 Chorus 3 Extras |

How to Jitterbug |
|
| TEACHERS | Marcus and Barbl | |
| DETAILS |
What is Jitterbug? End of the 1920’s in Harlem, New York, the name Lindy Hop coined a new swing dance craze, which revolutionized the social dance completely. Lindy Hop developed out of the Charleston and contains therefore many 8-count elements. But also a lot of other dance styles influenced the Lindy Hop. The essence lies in the improvisation just like in jazz music. In 1934 the bandleader Cab Calloway named a style of Lindy Hop “Jitterbug”. After that, “Jitterbug” became the synonym for Lindy Hop. Already in the 40’s, but especially nowadays, the term “Jitterbug” is used for a lot of different swing dance styles.
